Not that long ago, we often whispered the word “cancer” when we were willing or forced to speak about it and shunned anyone, whole communities, children… we even suspected could have HIV/AIDS.

We have evolved significantly past reactions of this kind.

Today, in the arena of physical illness, we more easily normalize than demonize and can distinguish our value from our symptoms.

When it comes to physical limitations of all kinds, we have found some compassion for each other and ourselves.

On a significant scale, we educate; raise money; and do the work to empower and heal ourselves.

This transformation has yet to come for mental illness.
